We get this question often:
Can I drive barefoot or do my practical driving test without shoes?
In Queensland, the answer is yes! It is legal to drive barefoot and you can also take a practical driving test whilst barefoot. However, the rules and regulations regarding footwear during a driving test vary from state to state in Australia, so it is important to check the specific requirements for the location where you will be taking the test.
*This rule only applies when driving a car (a vehicle that weighs a maximum of 4.5t gross vehicle mass (GVM), built or fitted to carry no more than 12 adults, including the driver).
In general, it is a good idea to wear appropriate footwear while driving, as it can help you maintain control of the vehicle and respond to emergencies. Shoes that are too loose or slippery can be dangerous to wear while driving, as they may cause your feet to slide off the pedals or interfere with your ability to operate the vehicle safely. High heeled shoes or steel-toed work boots could also be inappropriate footwear when driving.
In our opinion, we believe that driving barefoot can give you more precise control of the pedals (especially in a manual car) as you also get a better feel for the pedals.
If you are planning to take a driving test and are unsure about the footwear requirements, it is best to check with the relevant agency or the driving examiner conducting the test to get specific guidance.
